The Church of Parangaricutiro, forever freezed in lava

Description

Two men decorate burried Paricutin Church with flowers. Parícutin is a scoria-cone volcano located in the Mexican state of Michoacán. It first erupted from 1943 to 1952, an unusually long period of time. The eruption destroyed or heavily damaged a 233 km2 area and almost all the vegetation within several kilometers. All that remains of the town of Paricutin are parts of its main church which stand out among the hardened lava flow.
