Description
Popocatépetl has erupted on august 21st 2017, spewing ash and black smoke into the sky.
The volcano is located 50 miles (80km) south-east of the capital, Mexico City.
Mexico has more than 3,000 volcanoes but only 14 are considered active.
With 5,426 m (17,802 ft) it is the second highest peak in Mexico after Citlaltépetl (Orizaba).
On March 28, 2016 an ash column 2000 metres high was released, prompting the establishment of a 12-kilometer “security ring” around the summit. On 3 April 2016, Popocatépetl erupted, spewing lava, ash and rock. Eruptions have continued in August 2016, with four discrete blasts on August 17.
This volcano is monitored by the Deep Earth Carbon Degassing Project.
