Description
The Palace of Versailles was built in 1623 under the orders of King Louis XIII. It was a collection of pavilions in the midst of forests that served as a hunting retreat for the King. It was redesigned by the architects of Louis XIV and subsequently became the residence of the kings and nobles of the court until 1789 and the French Revolution.
It became the symbol of the power of the French Kingdom. The grandeur of the place was meant to reflect that of the kings.
