On November 8, 2013, the coasts of the Leyte region were struck by Typhoon Haiyan (called Yolanda in the Philippines). Haiyan is considered one of the most violent typhoons ever recorded, with entire neighborhoods in Tacloban city completely destroyed and thousands of casualties.
